Business prepared to do its bit under Level 6 water restrictions

12 November 2007

Commerce Queensland has not opposed today's announcement by the Queensland Water Commission that level 6 water restrictions will be introduced across South East Queensland later this month.

Commerce Queensland President, Beatrice Booth, said although there were initial concerns with a move to greater restrictions, it was pleasing to see the QWC had not introduced a raft of new obligations.

"We are pleased the Commission has focused on clarification and compliance targets, setting a target date of November 2008 for business to deliver 25 per cent savings or best practice," Mrs Booth said.

"We will continue to work with Government and Council to define best practice, as well as ensure Level 6 restrictions do not have a negative impact on economic growth and employment in Queensland."

Mrs Booth said many businesses are already being responsible in ensuring their operations are as water efficient as possible, and have outlaid considerable amounts to ensure compliance.

"We have seen that the business community is prepared to go the extra mile to come up with innovative solutions, which go above and beyond the Commission's requirements," Mrs Booth said.

"In fact, figures show 86 per cent of businesses have submitted a WEMP and are committed to water saving projects."

"Businesses should also be reminded that government funding, to the tune of 40 million dollars, is available to assist with payment of infrastructure to implement water savings measures."

"We thank those businesses who have supported the Water Commission and encourage the 14 per cent who have not submitted a WEMP to make use of the funding available."

It now remains to be seen whether indications that water restrictions and the WEMP program will be rolled out across the state come to fruition. Commerce Queensland will monitor this closely.
