Draft water strategy long overdue
10 April 2008
Commerce Queensland has today indicated its in-principle support for the draft South-East Queensland Water Strategy.
President Beatrice Booth said the strategy is vital to ensuring the ongoing adequacy and security of the region's water supplies, however is long overdue.
"We believe the development of a long-term comprehensive water supply strategy is a positive and important step," Mrs Booth said.
"However, as our current water supply woes have highlighted, there is no substitute for good forward planning and prompt action when it comes to the timely provision of adequate and reliable water infrastructure."
Mrs Booth said the inclusion of a 'Water Supply Guarantee' in the draft strategy was important in terms of certainty of future water supply in South-East Queensland.
"This will provide business and the wider community with greater assurance in respect of future water supply and the restriction regimes which may be imposed in the event of another severe drought," Mrs Booth said.
"It is also good to see that the draft strategy gives due consideration to issues such as climate change and population growth and recognises the importance of diversifying the region's sources of water supply to include more climate resilient supplies."
Commerce Queensland looks forward to continuing to work constructively with the Queensland Water Commission and the Queensland Government on the strategy and other water supply issues in South East Queensland, particularly pricing.
