Industry groups unite to fight payroll tax

7 May

A unified body of business associations met in Brisbane today to lobby both State and Federal Governments on the issue of payroll tax.

Initiated by Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland, the powerful group is representative of 405,000 Queensland businesses, employing 1.8 million people state wide.

The group will ask the Federal Government to pass on a $1.4 billion 'Specific Purpose Payment' to the State Government, which will enable a 50 per cent concession on payroll tax for Queensland businesses in 2009-10.

From the $1.4 billion package, 92 per cent will be invested or used to create 22,000 jobs for Queenslanders.

Today's unemployment figures further indicate the urgent need for the State and Federal Governments to listen to the peak industry associations and reduce payroll tax and create further jobs for Queenslanders.

The body consists of the following associations:

  • Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland
  • Boating Industry Association of Queensland
  • National Retail Association Ltd
  • Queensland Hoteliers Association
  • The Retailers Association
  • Queensland Tourism Industry Council
  • Spatial Industries Business Association
