CCIQ welcomes Bligh's link between population decentralisation & tax
25 November
Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland has praised the Premier for urging the Federal Government to play a role in decentralising Queensland's population through business tax incentives.
CCIQ Director, David Goodwin, said creating a strong business operating environment that allowed regional industries to complete nationally and globally was vital to the economic well-being of regional Queensland.
"Queensland's population debate has today taken a major step in the right direction with the Premier's comments," Mr Goodwin said.
"CCIQ has consistently highlighted the vital role that the State Government can play in building and sustaining Queensland’s economy, particularly for regional areas of the state.
"We have been calling on the government to consider corporate and payroll tax cuts as incentive for business to set up new industries in regional areas for some time."
Every region in Australia competes to some extent for investment dollars and a competitive tax regime is essential in enabling Queensland to have a competitive business operating environment.
"The ongoing challenge for this Government is to identify the areas where we can improve, and systematically address them," Mr Goodwin said.
"This is why it is so pleasing to see the Premier's recognition of State taxation as an important and essential aspect.
"The Premier's correspondence to the Federal Treasurer recognises that greater priority must be given to examining and bringing down the cost of doing business in regional Queensland."
