Interest in locally made goods on the increase

Australian Mande & Australian GrownUncertainty in our economy, increasing financial pressure on businesses and rising unemployment have collectively given an enormous boost to consumer awareness about the impact of purchasing decisions on our economy – and as a consequence local manufacturers and growers are flocking to carry the green and gold Australian Made, Australian Grown (AMAG) logo to meet this consumer sentiment.

"In the 2008-2009 financial year we experienced a phenomenal 46 percent increase in the number of businesses signing up to use the green and gold Australian Made logo which is clearly linked to an increased consumer interest in buying goods that support our economy, keep jobs in Australia and meet high safety standards. We're also seeing increased traffic to our website with its online directory of registered products, which now gets 1.5 million hits per month," says Ian Harrison, Chief Executive of the AMAG Campaign.

The AMAG logo is celebrating its 23rd birthday this year and is now recognised by 98 percent of consumers and trusted over other country of origin symbols by 86 percent. It was named a Superbrand in 2008 and can be seen on more than 10,000 products sold here in Australia and export markets around the world.

"The interest in Australian goods is enormous and presents retailers, manufacturers, processors and growers with great opportunities to promote goods as Australian and thus gain an important competitive advantage. We encourage businesses to be very aggressive in branding their goods as Australian and call on retailers to support them wherever possible, thereby making it easier for consumers to find locally made products," says Ian Harrison.

The logo is used by some of Australia's most innovative businesses and major retailers such as ALDI, Bev Marks Beds, Coles Supermarkets, Harvey Norman (Furniture & Bedding) and Forty Winks. Woolworths have also embraced it and now use it prominently in POS and advertising.
