Business Welcomes Federal Government Drought Package

Thursday 7 November, 2019 | By: Dan Petrie

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) has welcomed the Federal Government's one billion dollar drought assistance package that will seek to boost both restocking programs and small business in the regions.

CCIQ notes the Federal Government plan will target farming communities with a buy-now, pay later loan scheme to help feed starving cattle and $200 million package that will be directed to infrastructure spending through the Building Better Regions Fund.

Head of Media for CCIQ, Dan Petrie said the package was welcome and a step in the right direction but did say loans under a buy now, pay later scheme would need to be offered with a framework that recognises the financial distress many primary producers are currently experiencing.

"We obviously welcome this assistance but would urge Federal and State governments that the drought in regional Australia is the number one issue facing the economy.

"The need to boost regions and ensure that our farms are working at their best is critical in terms of Australia's overall exports and long term food security," Mr Petrie said.
