CCIQ ecoBiz program celebrates its environmental champions

Tuesday 11 October, 2016

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) has welcomed new champion partners to the ecoBiz business sustainability program.

The green-focussed Griffith University was the perfect host to the fifth CCIQ ecoBiz Leaders Forum.

“Their dedication to sustainability and the approach the team takes in connecting the wider community, it’s exactly what CCIQ ecoBiz is all about,” said ecoBiz program manager Manelle Issa about Griffith University.

“We were so proud to present the awards to five of our recently recognised leaders. The beauty of the program is that we’re helping so many different kinds of organisations across a range of industry, all over the state.”

The ecoBiz Star Partner Recipients (pictured, right) were:

Chris Hill – Mater Private Hospital (Champion Star Partner: Energy, Water and Waste)

David Drummond – Century Yuasa Batteries (Champion Star Partner: Energy, Water and Waste)

Paul Wilson – Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (Champion Star Partner: Energy, Water and Waste)

Melanie Dixon – Applied Eco Solutions (1 Star Partner: Energy)

Don Parry – Nambour Rugby Union Football Club (2 Star Partner: Energy and Water)

Dr Steven Miles, the State Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, joined CCIQ CEO Stephen Tait for the event last week.

“Using ecoBiz principles our little rugby club has been able to significantly reduce energy, water and chemical volumes and costs making us much more resilient should there be tough years,” said Nambour RUFC President Don Parry.

CCIQ ecoBiz is a fully-subsidised program that helps businesses save thousands of dollars across their power, water and waste bills. Through ecoBiz, businesses put sustainable ideas into practice.

The program provides Queensland businesses and organisations access to complimentary tools and events including one-to-one coaching, site survey, online benchmarking, workshops and webinars. As an ecoBizness, by engaging in these free services you have the opportunity to save your business up to:

  • 35 per cent off your power costs
  • 34 per cent of your water costs
  • 37 per cent of your waste costs

Ms Issa said ecoBiz had engaged with more than 4000 businesses across Queensland since the program started in 2013, with 38 recognised Star Partners.

“The program gives you support to help track your usage across all three metrics (energy, water and waste) and measure the savings that result from implementing even a few small changes through the program. With the help of our sustainability experts, you will be able to develop and implement an action plan to help your business save money and increase efficiencies.

“Through the program we help businesses understand energy, water and waste costs and teach you to save money through sustainability initiatives.”

Mr Tait said ecoBiz had been one of CCIQ’s success stories of recent years.

“We have put a tremendous amount of work and resources into this program to help small businesses make genuine savings on their energy bills,” he said.

“We are proud to have helped so many cut their costs in challenging economic times. We hope the program will continue for many more years yet.”

The event included a tour of Griffith University’s EcoCentre and Sir Samuel Griffith Building, a working model of a building that could operate off the grid, which achieved a 6 star Green Star rating and is powered by solar PV and hydrogen fuel cells. Guests can also view the famous high-tech Red Zone.

Delwyn Langdon, Manager, EcoCentre, Griffith University, and Mark Thompson, one of the Principal Architects who designed the EcoCentre, led a discussion on the design and construction, and how can partnerships assist in achieving sustainability outcomes for business.
