1 Minute of Video is Worth 1.8 Million Words

Monday 29 August, 2016

Video is predicted to be 74% of all internet traffic by 2017 (that’s just six months away). You will probably be noticing a lot more video content on all your digital and social media channels. Yes, it is taking over everything and it is the fastest growing tool for digital marketing.

So why is video becoming so popular?

Videos are processed by the brain 60,000 times faster than text, and the brain is drawn to content that doesn’t take much effort to comprehend (you might call it laziness) but I see it as human nature to be drawn to video.

Video has lots of practical applications for your business. It allows you to share a lot of information in a short time, show your brand personality and create engagement with your audience in a way they can relate to. You can showcase your products or services, share brand culture and behind the scenes, do interviews, Q&A’s and video blogs plus share tips and tactics to show your expertise and you can even use it for internal team training.

Most importantly, search engines give priority to those websites that feature video content with 70% of top search listings containing at least one video. And according to Google, 1 minute of video is worth 1.8 million words. So that’s a reason alone to be using video right?

For customers it’s a great way to absorb information and learn, you can consume it on the go, it’s easy to share, you can watch it on any platform, and it’s preferred over reading a bunch of text. Video is visual, it’s engaging, people remember it, and your audience much prefers to watch a video over reading content.

Live streaming video takes it a step further. With new platforms like Blab, Facebook Live, and YouTube Live you can be more dynamic and interact with fans and customers with the click of a button on your phone, providing a very accessible medium for you to engage your audience.
It doesn’t need to be expensive either. There are many tools and platforms you can use to film, edit and host your video content. Here is a tip though – always add a professional intro and tail and include a branded thumbnail image.

There’s a reason that YouTube is the second most popular search engine in the world!
So when you are planning your marketing content, think about how you can incorporate video into the marketing mix to show your expertise and lead your industry rather than waiting and being a ‘me too’ follower in the next year.
