Small Business boost from strengthening local chambers

Friday 30 September, 2016

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) has teamed up with natural gas producer QGC and local chambers of commerce and business groups to help rural and regional small businesses.

CCIQ and QGC are supporting the Western and Darling Downs through the Strengthening Local Chambers Program and are committed to helping local businesses grow and develop.

Together, they host the fourth CCIQ-QGC Business Resilience Forum in October, featuring experts across various fields who will pass on crucial advice to help small businesses.

Nexus Innovation, who presented Why People Don’t Do Business With You at the May event, will focus on other key areas to help small business.

Chris Hodda will look at the power of vulnerability; managing your environment; how do human beings think and make decisions; persuasion strategies; and problem solving.

This 90-minute interactive session will deliver a main presentation, supported by a mini workshop aimed at assisting businesses to understand “learned” thinking behaviours and how this can positively or negatively impact performance and success.

Join Chris as he helps you identify what’s holding you and your business back from achieving the success you deserve.

The forums, on October 10-14, will cover essentials such as business development/sales and human resources and industrial relations.

“We know that this event will help you and your business to be more resilient, profitable and productive. Free for (chamber) members and local business, this event will be the smartest investment in your time you will make this year,” said CCIQ’s Partnership Delivery Manager John Purvis.

Three previous forums had been a huge success for small business in the region. Just ask the locals.

“As a small business, your assistance in keeping business in Regional Queensland motivated during our current climate together with the resource tools and support available is a powerful means with which I am positive is embraced by all,” said Debbie Doneman, HR Manager at T&W Earthmoving, Condamine.

“This is aided by the additional availability of the download of the full presentation made available together with the webinars which I use as a training tool.”

“Thank you so much for educating me on matters that I was totally unaware of,” said Paula Toohey, owner of Creek Café, Miles.

“It’s one thing to start your own business but coming from overseas it becomes a major task with lots of hidden mountains and learning curbs. I will be forever grateful for your expertise and knowledge never mind the help.”

Strengthening Local Chambers is a program developed in partnership by QGC and CCIQ to help provide resources and support services to members of chambers of commerce in the Western Downs.

Running across Chinchilla, Jandowae, Miles, Tara and Wandoan, the program will support local businesses by providing expert training, advice and support across a range issues from HR to marketing, as well as providing essential website and communications infrastructure for each chamber of commerce.

Businesses attending the forum will gain an understanding of the benefits of the Strengthening Local Chambers Program and how it can help support them.

The events will also cover essentials such as business marketing, workplace relations and advocating for change in the community with local council and government. It will help businesses to be more resilient, profitable and productive.

There will be an introduction to the CCIQ/QGC relationship and purpose.

CCIQ Senior Employer Assistance Advisor Jason Wales will also be on hand to give tips on workplace relations, the Fair Work Act and complex awards. He will focus largely on handling unfair dismissal claims.

“Unfair dismissal claims by employees are becoming more common place in today’s business landscape and generally employers are lacking the skill and exposure to be able to effectively respond to these claims,” Jason said.

“CCIQ has developed a presentation to guide employers through the response process once they receive an unfair dismissal claim and what happens next once the response is submitted.

“The benefit of a clear, concise and accurate response will assist the employer in defending their position of dismissal of the employee. Essential to the termination process is procedural fairness.

“Employers must follow the guidelines as set out by the Fair Work Act 2009 when it comes to dismissing an employee whether they be casual, full time, within probation or under performance management.

“The aim of this presentation is to address all of the aspects of an unfair dismissal claim and the process around making a successful submission.”

Also, as a business owner and local chamber member, we are offering you the opportunity to meet one-on-one with our expert presenters from Nexus Innovation and CCIQ to discuss your business and any specific challenges you may be facing. Book your 30-minute consultation time now.
