Waste Levy Changes
From today, the Queensland Waste Levy will apply to all waste put into landfill.
What these changes mean for your business
The cost of the levy will be charged to commercial waste taken to resource recovery centres (rubbish tips). The levy cost may be added as a waste utility charge in your commercial rates notices distributed in your local government area or through commercial operators passing on the cost for collection of your business waste.
The cost of the levy ranges from $75 per tonne to $155 per tonne, depending on the type of waste disposed.
How CCIQ can help
While it was being developed, CCIQ opposed the waste levy as we were concerned about the impact on businesses across Queensland. We continue to advocate for several policy measures to support businesses throughout the implementation of the levy. Specifically, we have focussed on the use of the revenue generated by the levy that will be allocated to councils. Our focus is on ensuring that the State Government appropriately redistributes levy funding back into the community to support regional industry programs and infrastructure priorities.
If you wish to raise your concerns with us directly, please email our advocacy and policy team here.
CCIQ ecoBiz has put together some useful information to help Queensland-based businesses to navigate this new landscape. EcoBiz is a free government funded program that can help provide tailored solutions for waste management for your business.
