Border opening will boost business confidence; let’s hope the budget delivers more

Tuesday 24 November, 2020

Businesses are breathing a sigh of relief with today’s announcement that Queensland’s border is likely to open to all states, excluding South Australia, from December 1st said the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ), but looks forward to more good news in next month’s budget.

With many businesses still largely impacted by the ongoing border restrictions preventing visitors into Queensland, the opening of our border will provide some confidence leading into the Christmas period, explained CCIQ’s general manager of advocacy and policy, Amanda Rohan.

“Throughout this pandemic, CCIQ has consistently called for transparency and for the business community to be engaged and informed so they can plan their operations ahead of time and today’s announcement will allow that to happen,” said Ms Rohan.

“We look forward to having the Victoria decision being confirmed tomorrow, and for a decision on South Australia to be announced as soon as possible, so Queensland businesses can gear up and enjoy a bumper Christmas period.

“So when your family and friends come to visit, make sure you get them out into our suburbs, explore our regions and to support small Queensland businesses while they’re here.

“Today’s announcement will give businesses confidence a boost, and we want to see the positive momentum continue.

“We’ve already put the call out to the Palaszczuk Government to make Queensland the best state to do business, and in next month’s budget, there is an opportunity to do that.

“It’s been a tough year, so it would be great to end it on a note that will see business invigorated through further tax relief, and incoming financial support and schemes which will see them able to stand solidly on their own when the stimulus support comes to an ends,” said Ms Rohan.

CCIQ will continue to advocate for a national framework regarding border controls moving forward, so businesses are given insight and certainty of knowing what to expect should any further outbreaks occur.
