#Business2032: Regional Queensland's opportunity to share in Olympics impact

Wednesday 15 September, 2021 | By: Emma Clarke

Queensland businesses in line to share in billions of dollars worth of exposure from the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games bidding and award process are encouraged to get involved early to ensure they’re in the running to benefit from Olympic Games projects.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) Senior Policy Advisor Gus Mandigora said businesses across the state could benefit from the lead-up to the 2032 Games if government and business collaborated effectively.

He said while the Games were 10 years away, now was the time for Queensland businesses to begin planning their advance to the economic podium.

“We know the Games will present billions of dollars in advertising exposure value to South East Queensland and beyond, which is likely to generate significant post-COVID confidence, as well as business and tourism opportunities, highlighting Queensland as an attractive place to visit and do business,” Mr Mandigora said.

“Queensland as a whole could cash in on some of this exposure, through tourism, hospitality and events, but also in other sectors such as sports and recreation and professional services.

“The exposure is coming at the right time for businesses still recovering from the economic impacts of COVID-19, particularly as the rest of the world begins recovering and opening up again.

“Queensland’s business landscape is dominated by small and medium enterprises, and they could stand to benefit from this increased exposure.

“This type of publicity will put Queensland in the spotlight and set us up for a potential post-COVID visitor and business boom.”

The Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 contributed up to $6 billion in international exposure for Australia, with $6.1 billion in inbound tourism spending.

At the same time, $413 million worth of Olympic business came to Queensland with an estimated injection of up to $50 million into local economies.

Mr Mandigora said it was essential for Queensland business to know details about what projects and opportunities were planned for the 2032 Olympics and how, when and where they could make the most of them.

"The Brisbane 2032 website is a good start, but we need to go further,” he said.

“The 2032 Games have the potential to leave a lasting legacy on the Queensland economy though improved tender processes and procurement opportunities, but that potential will only be realised if government and business work together from the start.

“We’re calling for details on an Olympics plan for business so those looking to cash in on opportunities can start to plan and invest now to ensure they’re well placed compete for those opportunities.”

Business can register their details on the Brisbane 2032 website to stay updated on procurement opportunities.
